1. Where can I see the BackUp Gmail errors and logs?

BackUp Gmail has an integrated logs system and you can easily read them in our Utility window -> Logs but first of all you need to Enable the Logs in the Preferences.

If the App crashes, before writing us, please Open the Console and copy the Errors (so you can send them to us).

2. Get “Error logging into account” error but my credentials are right.

You need to enable the IMAP access in your Gmail settings.
If you not resolve maybe you have the 2-step verification (verification code) enabled, create a new Application-specific passwords for BackUp Gmail App and use it.

3. How are my emails saved?

An archive created in the directory that you choose in the Preferences window. In the selected directory you will find a db.sqlite file and a FileStore folder.  The database stores all relevant data from every single email (ld, data, folders, etc).  In the FileStore folder, the emails are saved in the .eml format and they are organized in subfolders: years, months, etc.

4. Get “AllMail folder not found” error.

You need to enable the “AllMail” folder in your Gmail settings.

5. How to reset the App.

First of all close the App if it is still run.
To reset your App and restart from scratch you need to delete:

  1. your backup folder selected in the Preferences
  2. your Preferences file, you can find it in one of these paths:
    • ~/Library/Preferences/net.m4ss.BackUpGmail.plist (delete this file – if exists)
    • ~/Library/Containers/net.m4ss.BackUpGmail (delete this folder)

~/Library/” is the private system folder. You cannot browse it directly because it should be hidden but you can open the Finder and go to “Go -> Go to folder”, paste “~/Library/” (without quotes) and it shows you!

6. If I delete an email online what happens locally?

After backing up an email locally it is safe forever but, to keep trace of your intentions, we “move” it to the Trash. It is only a relationship in the database, the email will be there forever.
In other words the App creates a backup of the emails and relationships. Every kind of information is stored into the DB but we save every email as a file in your Filestore folder. When you move an email in the Trash on Gmail online our procedure moves relationship of your email to the Trash but doesn’t touch the file that you can find in FileStore folder.

7. How to enable the internal logs for IMAP transaction.

It could be very helpful to understand what goes wrong in the IMAP requests/responses with Gmail server but do not forget to disable it when you are done (it increases quickly and it uses a lot of memory!).
You can enable it by Terminal with a simple command line, follow this steps:

  1. Close BackUp Gmail
  2. Open the Terminal (Applications -> Utility -> Terminal) and then paste this command (click Enter on the keyboard to run it):
defaults write net.m4ss.BackUpGmail IMAPLogging -bool true
  3. Open BackUp Gmail
  4. Enable both types of logs in Preferences
  5. Run a new backup procedure

Now in your Utility->Logs you should see more logs (in the version < 1.9.4).
In the version >= 1.9.4 it will create a log file in your backup folder “FileStore”.

To disable the IMAP log level send this command by Terminal:
defaults write net.m4ss.BackUpGmail IMAPLogging -bool false
